Learning How To Use Fruity Loops or Reason or Logic Pro or Pro Tools?

December 3, 2009

Make beats like a pro by studying the pros! Before you learned to walk, you watched the adults around you walk, and then started practicing until you could stand. You probably landed on your rump many times before you finally were able to walk on your own. Learning how to make beats, like any other skill, takes time and practice, and when you’re just getting started, it’s good to remember that all professional beat makers started out the same way.

To become successful making your own beats, you do not have to reinvent the wheel. The shortest distance between you and success can be conquered by learning from successful producers in the game. This article will teach you how to avoid wasting your time by starting at the top, and learning from the masters.

Identify Your Favorite Beat Makers

Before you buy beat making software, it’s important that you know who’s who. First, chek out your music collection, and list your favorite beat makers. Perhaps you’re a Timbaland fan, or maybe you like Swizz Beatz. Or perhaps you know some up and coming producers in the game with some sick beats. Even if they’re not the most hottest producers now, the most important thing is that you choose music and beats that move you. The tracks on this list will teach you about creativity.

Identify Today’s Hot Beat Makers

At this moment, who are considered to be the hottest hip hop producers? Whether you like them or not personally, these beat makers are doing something right. Listen to the radio, read Billboard, talk to other hip-hop lovers to get a feel for who’s doing what in the hip-hop game, and add them to your list. This list will teach you which beats are considered “commercial”, in other words, MONEY MAKERS!

Break Down the Tracks

Here’s the fun part. Take some time, and I mean HOURS, to just listen to tracks by the beat makers on both of your lists. If you don’t or won’t make the time to study your craft, success in this game will not come. Lose yourself in the tracks and ask yourself why you think that a track is good. Is it the kick drum that makes a beat hot? Is it the snare? Or is the drum loop hot? Mentally take the tracks apart to understand what it is that makes people fill the dance floor when the song is played at the club.

Make Beats for Practice

As soon as you feel your head is ready to explode from all the beats you’ve been hearing, get some beat making software and use your favorite tracks as inspiration. Choose one favorite producer at a time, and try your hand making a beat that sounds like each of them. Every producer has his own style, and you can learn a lot by using them as role models.

Start Making Your Own Beats

After you’ve taught yourself the tips and tricks made famous by successful beat makers, it’s time to make your own original beats. Let your hip-hop “mentors” inspire you to try new sounds and rhythms.

Once you’ve made lots of tracks with your beat making software, play tracks for friends and rappers and listen closely to their feedback. Adjust your beats when necessary, and learn to be the best beats maker you can be!

Music Production is either born in you and you are a musical naturally but like many thousands of talented producers they had to learn.

Don’t think because you don’t know a thing about making music there is no hope, there is great hope and I know exactly what can get you making beats in no time, entering competitions and ultimately getting you a internship with a major record label. ‘I wanna make music’, ‘I want to Produce Music’, ‘I Want to make beats’ and ‘I want to be the next big thing’ are phrases I hear from newbie producers every day, but are they doing anything about it?
