In What Format Should I Release My Music? CD, Digital, etc?

March 25, 2010

Website: www.musicproducerpro.net

There are a few different formats you can release your music on, the main ones being Compact Disk (CD), vinyl, and data file (E.G. MP3, WAV etc). Depending on your aim and your target market, the format you release your music in will be different. If you’re releasing your music to a more main stream audience that like to download their music to their MP3 players, you may want to only release a data file. If however you’re targeting hardcore underground music fanatics, you may want to release a vinyl as there are pockets of people who still feel they’re more “authentic”, especially DJs.

Here are the pros and cons of each format:

CD

Pros:

  • The Compact Disk (CD) format is the most common tangible format around now.
  • Most people have a way of playing CDs in their house, and you wouldn’t have trouble bringing your CD to other places and being able to play it.
  • A lot of people are still drawn to owning their music in physical format, so it is still worth pressing up CDs.

Cons:

  • While CDs are still popular, sales have decreased as sales of data files (E.G. MP3s / WAV etc, see below) have increased. It is now harder to sell CDs then before, as a lot of people favor the ‘instant delivery’ data file.
  • While durable, CDs can also get scratched and damaged. If damaged too bad, this can make the CD unusable and you’d have to purchase the CD again.

Vinyl

Pros:

  • Vinyl can be good if you’re targeting a niche market where the Djs within the market still favor vinyls.

Cons:

  • Vinyls are very expensive to produce. On top of this there aren’t many people that still use vinyl, making it hard to find a place to use them as not everywhere has the required equipment to make them work. While you can buy your own ‘decks’ to play them on, these are very expensive and limit you to playing the music in your house.
  • Vinyl is also big and heavy, so moving your music collection won’t be an easy job. It also wears down over time, so if you’re playing your music a lot you’ll be hearing crackles and jumps at some point.

Data File (E.G. MP3 Music File)

Pros:

  • Data files such as MP3s, WAV and WMA can be cheaper then physical products for both consumers and artists. This is because unlike physical products, you don’t have to spend money on packaging and pressing up multiple units. Your only expense would be renting the space to sell your products, and if you get your own in house shopping cart (The way to sell your music and other non tangible products online) this is often only a one off fee. There are many websites that also let you upload and sell your products for free, only taking a commission for each unit you sell. This means if you don’t make any money you don’t have any expenses to pay.
  • Of course, these savings can turn out to huge and can be risk free. Remember, you can pass these savings on to your customer, so you offer them the product for cheaper then if they were buying a CD, but still have a bigger profit margin for yourself as you have less expenses.
  • Another pro about having data files is that they’re easy to deliver. You don’t have to rely on distribution companies taking them round to the shops, you can simply sell them from home on your own website or a website specially set up to sale music files.

Cons:

  • Currently, data files are very easy to share. This is a problem, as with so many people getting your music for free, sales will obviously be effected in a negative way.
  • While your music can still be stolen from compact disk and vinyl, having the data file make it easier for these thieves to share.
  • Another con is there are still many people who don’t shop online for whatever reason. If you have a data file only release, you’re excluding some people from having your product, even if they may have wanted it.

Conclusion:

If you’re on a low budget, a data file only release may be the way forward. It won’t involve much cost to sell your music (If any) and you’ll be able to get music to your fans instantly. If however you have got more of a budget and want to appeal to people that don’t buy music online, it may be best to go for a digital AND CD release. This should appeal to all potential customers and ensure you’re music’s easily obtainable (Provided it’s in the right shops of course).

How To Make A Hit Record Using Autotune

January 7, 2010

Website – www.musicproducerpro.net

When it comes to what is popular in any chart weather it be pop, rnb, hip hop, rock .. anything! Auto Tune always seems to be the thing that gets these people these hit records and why.. it’s not exactly them singing is it.. so why are you not doing what they are doing to make some hit records and take over the world. If rappers like Drake can make a few songs using Autotune and is now looked at like he can actually sing.. i would say jump on the bandwagon.. it’s what the listener wants to hear that counts when it comes to making hit records, if your making music for yourself and don’t want to sell out this article won’t help you.

Autotune is a tool that was created many years ago and only a few artists like Zapp & Roger were using it on tracks like computer love. But now it’s used like mad to create hit records that teens are buying.. downloading and sharing with friends. Face it! Look in the charts.. at least 7 of the top 10 records use Autotune and why.. because it SELLS! Kanye West made a whole album using Autotune and went to number 1 with it.. it’s something that you cannot avoid!

How do you use Autotune? Well it’s basically you trying hit the note you want to and trying to hold it, you will need some kind of singing skill if you actually want it to be perfect but a mistake here or there the listener wouldnt even notice. Use some compression and echo or something and your good to go! It’s as simple as that.. the next step. Finding the lyrics for the song.. Autotune doesn’t do it all for you lol.

How to get an internship from a record label

November 29, 2009

Producing Music from your own Music Production Studio no longer is as hard as it once use to be, you do not have to spend mega bucks a month renting somebody else’s studio when you can have your own Home Studio. Music Production is either born in you and you are a musical naturally but like many thousands of talented producers they had to learn.

Don’t think because you don’t know a thing about making music there is no hope, there is great hope and I know exactly what can get you making beats in no time, entering competitions and ultimately getting you a internship with a major record label. ‘I wanna make music’, ‘I want to Produce Music’, ‘I Want to make beats’ and ‘I want to be the next big thing’ are phrases I hear from newbie producers every day, but are they doing anything about it? Are they getting the information they need? And I think the answer is no.

I have found a website that can turn someone who hasn’t got a creative mind into a master mind, and to think if you have a general interest in making music.. You will go far. I am going to post a link at the bottom of this page and I suggest if you wish to get into the music industry you check it out and have a look at the information because it goes so deep you will think you famous before you are.

Stay forced and you will suceed.

Getting signed to a major record label – Look how easy it is

November 24, 2009

Website: www.musicproducerpro.net

Getting a internship at a Major Record Label may sound like something that is hard to do however it isn’t as hard as it seems. I am going to be blunt, it comes down to you producing what the listener wants to hear and what the record label wants to hear. You could be mega talented and could be able to do some crazy keys on the keyboard however you may not be what the record label is looking for however, if you ever got in front of a record label you do not want to make the mistake in playing them something that is not what they want to hear.

Learning what the listener wants to hear is the key to getting an internship in a major record label because if the listener does not what to hear it they are not going to buy it. So if they record label doesn’t feel it and they have years and years of experience, more than likely the listener is not going to feel it however you have to master the key to success in a major record label and that is learning how to make music for the listener.

You could be producing any genre of music because there is a market for everybody out there; it just has to be good enough. It could be that you do have the talent and are ready, however the industry isn’t ready or you could really need help producing music before your ready for major exposure. It all ties down to one thing, producing music that listener wants to hear.

Good luck getting an internship.

Learning how to produce music is something that is fun and allows you to be creative, it’s frees the mind, body and soul and allows your emotions to come out in the creation of music. Producing music is always a challenge to someone who hasn’t produced music before but don’t feel pushed back because your friends can already make hot music, you can too and I have some information that will get you making music as soon as you want.

I find the best way of learning something is by watching someone else do it so if you had a mentor, or someone to guide you through problems of how to work with the music software things would move a lot smoother. I have found a website that does just that and truly, the results are amazing.
